Janmashtami (Krishnashtami) 2008
For a lesson on family celebrations, an Indian student of mine chose the holiday Janmashtami. I tried representing different cultures with videos, and this is one for that occasion. If anyone has anything better, please send me a link.

YOYO - Eid Song - أغنية العيد - يويو
Several grades do lessons centered around family traditions. We have many Muslim students and I was looking for a visual of some sort to represent their family celebrations. Here's a cute one for Eid.

Elementary Stitchery - Threading a Needle
This is how I teach my students in grades K through 5 how to thread a needle.
The threader tool I use is a piece of copper wire that I wrapped around a pen. I used masking tape to tape the ends.

Cycles
Another odd one from Cyriak. (I love it!) Not so sure my little ones would appreciate it, but my fifth graders would think it is very cool.
The Big Pig Song
This is a video I could show pre-K through second if there is time left over at the end of class.

Snippety Gibbet's Sculpture Song
This is a song I came up with to help kids understand sculpture. After one time singing it through, it is mostly stuck permanently in their brains. I like that because they often have difficulty in describing exactly what differentiates sculpture from another art form.

The Cat Came Back
This is another great film from the National Film Board of Canada. This would be another one that I could show during dismissal. I could also picture it as an inspiration for a sub lesson. The kids might have to think of a series of drawings like a cartoon storyboard. What might happen each time the cat came back...or the cow...or the moose...

Carried Away
........from the National Film Board of Canada. "Carried Away." It's a little over 6 minutes long. This is the synopsis from their site.
This short animated film is an impressionistic reflection on the creative process. Using black-and-white photographs (representing reality), overlaid with animated colour drawings (representing fantasy), it illustrates the artist as he braves creative storms, indulges spontaneous bursts of inspiration and learns, by trial and error, to harness his creative powers.

Cartoons in the Art Room?
Someone asked about the reasons I post the Bugs Bunny cartoons and the like. I don't use them during class time for the most part. My students dismiss from my classroom at the end of the day and the dismissal process takes about 15 minutes. So, while the kids are waiting to hear their buses called, I show a cartoon. They stay mostly quiet and that saves my sanity at the end of the day.
Once in a while, if my preschool classes finish their work with too short an amount of time to do anything else, I might show one. That way, when their teacher arrives at the door, they're calm. We're not running around trying to gather up supplies.
Thanks for asking.

This was a nicely done video of a YAM show in Millburn, NJ last year.

I am digging around for all things "Youth Art Month." With all the cuts in funding to the arts right now, I am getting a bit feverish about advocacy, and trying to find some ideas that fit me.

Youth Art Month - Illustrator - Robert Sabuda
Ooooooooooooh la la!!!!!!! As a paper artist, I just ADORE Robert Sabuda. I look at his pop ups and am totally astounded at how his paper sculptures can fold up with such ease. Here's another interview at "Meet Me At the Corner.org."
